Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER) is seeking a scientist with expertise in atmospheric remote sensing and radiative transfer to support the work of AER in various government-funded remote sensing projects (NOAA, NASA, US Air Force, US Navy).

AER remote sensing scientists work in diverse areas including radiative transfer and retrieval of atmospheric constituents, cloud, and surface properties from passive observations in the microwave, infrared, and visible parts of the spectrum, retrieval from active sensor measurements (space borne radars), sensor simulation and calibration, data assimilation in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models and more. AER’s projects are interesting, challenging, varied, and rewarding, and we are seeking candidates with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment as well as independently. AER’s projects require specialized experience in atmospheric and physical sciences, meteorology, mathematics, and computational methods, and we will train the successful candidate on objectives, methodology, and resources for specific projects.

Required qualifications include:

  • 4 years specific science experience and expertise in at least some of the following areas: remote sensing, microwave, infrared and visible radiative transfer in clear and cloudy environments, variational retrieval methods, satellite data assimilation, radiometric calibration and NWP modeling
  • experience with at least one satellite remote sensing data set
  • an advanced degree in meteorology, physics, applied mathematics, or a similar field
  • capability to conduct scientific research independently and collaboratively
  • capability or potential to lead or contribute to successful proposals for new projects in research or applied science
  • good knowledge of Unix/Linux, Fortran 90 and more recent versions, shell scripts, Microsoft office and at least one data analysis and visualization tool/language (e.g., IDL)

Knowledge of python, git, gitlab, and basic C/C++ is a plus.
