The Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory of Columbia University invites applications for a Senior Staff Associate to support the modeling required for the research programs of Professors McKinley and Abernathey, their Postdoctoral Researchers, and graduate and undergraduate students. The candidate will also be involved in exploring the use of cloud computing for research models.
Will assist the McKinley and Abernathey Research Groups with configuring, compiling, running, and managing output from ocean models. The candidate is expected to become an expert in ocean modeling and its role in these Research Groups. The primary ocean model currently in use by these groups is MITgcm, which the candidate will deploy on a range of different high-performance computing platforms, but other ocean models may also be used in the future.
Will also contribute to the interpretation of modeling results in the context of current questions in physical and biogeochemical oceanography, and present these results in the scientific literature and at national and international meetings.
Candidates should have MS degree and 4 years of related experience in Oceanography, Atmospheric, and/or Climate Science, or a BS and 8 years of related experience in Oceanography, Atmospheric, and/or Climate Science is required. Advanced degree preferred. Must have at least 2 years of in-depth experience with running ocean and climate models and High Performance Computing systems, potentially as part of a degree program. Experience with FORTRAN, and Matlab and/or Python is required. Strong writing and analysis skills, and experience with publishing in the scientific peer- reviewed literature are desired.
The position requires the ability to work independently and collaboratively with the McKinley and Abernathey Research Groups, be self-motivated in their own work and also to develop connections to the ocean and climate modeling communities nationally and internationally.
Appointments are made on a fiscal year basis and are eligible for renewal each July 1, contingent upon performance and funding.
