Thu, 2017/06/01 - 10:38am -- shawn

Atmospheric Science Researcher – Idaho Falls, ID

 More Information:  https://chc.tbe.taleo.net/chc01/ats/careers/requisition.jsp?org=ERT&cws=1&rid=1700

Position Description

Will be part of a team conducting atmospheric boundary layer research at the Field Research Division (FRD) of the NOAA Air Resources Laboratory. The division focuses on research related to pollutant dispersion, the effects of boundary-layer structure on wind energy production, and improvements to the representation of air-surface interactions in NOAA forecast models. Some of the work is in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy. Will have an opportunity to participate in field observations, data analysis, and modeling efforts related to the division’s research areas.

Required Skills

1+ year of either graduate-level or work-related experience in a research area related to atmospheric boundary layer structure and evolution. Specific research experience in plume dispersion or issues related to air-surface interactions, such as the measurement and modeling of surface fluxes, is a plus for this position. Should be creative, have an ability to work independently, and have good verbal and written communication skills. Experience configuring and running numerical models such as the Weather Research & Forecasting (WRF) model on Linux or Unix systems is also desirable but not required.

Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility.

Education

Ph.D. in Atmospheric Scinece, physics, related discipline, or equivalent.

  • Radiometric, geometric, and spectral calibration of Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI).
  • Validation of the instrument products, including the methods using the Global Space-based Inter-Calibration System (GSICS), CWG Extended Navigation and Registration Analysis and Improvement System (CENRAIS), pseudo-invariant calibration sites (PICS), deep convective clouds (DCC), the Moon, stars, and radiative transfer model (RTM), etc.
  • Development and maintenance of software.
  • Processing and analyzing large volume of satellite data using low and high level of computer languages such as FORTRAN, C/C++, scripts, IDL, MatLab, etc.
  • Technical communications, including status report, project review, conference presentation, and publication in peer reviewed journals.

Required Skills

3 + years of experience in satellite sensor calibration or related field. Experience with radiometric calibration; validation of instrument products; common data formats such as netCDF and HDF, SQL; and radiative transfer model. Experience using FORTRAN, IDL, C/C++, and Matlab. Experience with visualization software/tools.

Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident and be able to pass a background investigation to obtain a security badge to enter the applicable government facility.
