I have no formal teaching commitments now that I am retired, but “Doing Physical Oceanography” is still fun. I have been studying the deep flows in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea and their connection to the open Atlantic, as well as the strange mechanism of ring shedding from the Loop Current.  I'm co-editor of an AGU monograph on the Circulation in the Gulf of Mexico. I am trying to understand the low-frequency variability in sea level in the open ocean and along the U.S. coasts.

I have been a member of a NOAA-NRDA commission that is trying to understand ocean currents as they relate to the effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill of April 2010.
